WOMBARIA
Frequently asked questions
For most women, yes, when the temperature is comfortable, the herbs match your imbalances, and the timing fits your cycle. It is contraindicated during pregnancy, menstruation, fresh spotting, genital burning or itchiness, recent spontaneous bleeding, post-insemination when trying to conceive, and post-surgery. Steam should feel relaxing and warm, and never too hot. Full screening details are on the Vaginal Steaming page.
Yes, though less than there should be. Vaginal steaming has not been studied extensively by Western medicine, but a number of studies have come out over the past two decades and the results so far have been favorable. They come from researchers in Korea, China, the Netherlands, Suriname, Switzerland, India, and the United States, covering postpartum recovery, vaginal atrophy, and endometriosis recurrence among other things. The Steamy Chick Institute keeps a section of its website with all the current research on the subject. I would rather send you there to read it yourself than summarize it for you: steamychick.institute.
A system of medicine practiced for more than two thousand years. Rather than treating a symptom on its own, it looks at the whole body as a set of relationships and asks what pattern the symptoms are pointing to.I am not a doctor of Chinese medicine. I don't practice acupuncture and I don't prescribe herbal formulas. What I use is the framework, because peristeam hydrotherapy is built on it. That is why I ask about the color of your blood, whether you run hot or cold, your digestion, and your sleep. Those details are how we work out which of the seven steam patterns fits you.It also explains why two women with the same diagnosis often need different blends. If you want Chinese medicine itself — acupuncture, or herbal formulas taken internally — that is a licensed acupuncturist, and I am glad to point you toward one.
Stagnation, excess heat, dryness, dampness, blood deficiency, uterine fatigue, and weak digestion. The framework comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine and it is what peristeam screening is built on. Your cycle tells us most of what we need — the color of the blood, the timing, the pain, the discharge. Most women carry more than one, and the mix shifts over time.
It is a fertility awareness method built entirely on cervical mucus. No temperature, no internal exams, no test strips. You pay attention to the sensation at your vulva through the day and note what you see, and over a few cycles a pattern appears. After your period there are usually dry or unchanging days. Then estrogen rises and the mucus builds — sticky, then wet, then clear and slippery. The last day of that slippery sensation is your Peak, and ovulation happens right around it. That is your fertile window, and you can see it as it is happening rather than guessing from a calendar or waiting on an app.Women use it to conceive, to avoid conceiving, or simply to understand their own cycle. I use it as information: your mucus pattern shows what your estrogen is doing, and that tells me a great deal about which imbalance you are carrying.
A whole month of information about your cycle, not one data point. Most women think temperature charting is only about catching ovulation. That is the smallest part of it. I am looking at how many days your luteal phase runs, whether your temperature holds steady after ovulation or dips around, whether it rises at all, and how it moves across the whole month. That is where the patterns tend to show up.You take it first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. One minute a day. After a couple of cycles we can see what your body has been doing all along.
Usually three to six months. It could be longer or shorter depending on the issue and your progress. After your initial consult I come up with a plan for how many months we need, and each month we meet after your period to reevaluate and adjust. The goal is to get you onto a maintenance plan so no further imbalances arise.
The steaming consult is $200 and covers your full cycle evaluation, your imbalances, your steam plan, herb selection, and your protocol. If you are trying to conceive, the steaming and fertility consult together is $300.After that, ongoing work is billed monthly. Steaming clients meet with me for 30 minutes after each period, at $100 a month. If you are working with me on fertility, sessions run longer because there is a chart to read: $150 a month for one 45 minute session, or $200 a month for two 30 minute sessions if you want closer support. How many months you need is decided together after your consult.
Yes, in most cases, but the setup gets modified. An IUD, hormonal birth control, or Depo-Provera are not contraindications on their own — they are reasons to adjust the temperature, the duration, the herbs, or all three. Tell me at your consult and we build your plan around it.
I am a certified fertility coach. I am trained in peristeam hydrotherapy and completing my certification practicum, trained to teach the Arvigo self-care sequence, and currently working toward certification in the Billings Ovulation Method. I am also partway through a master's in natural medicine and an Integrative Health Practitioner program. My credentials are listed on the About Me page and updated the day anything changes.
Honest answer: these are traditional practices with generations of use behind them and limited modern research. What they support are the conditions fertility depends on — circulation, warmth, drainage, and a cycle that is working properly. They are not a treatment for infertility and they don't replace medical care. Many of my clients do this work alongside IVF or IUI.
A lot of my clients have PCOS. Steam users have reported improvement with PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and polyps, and some have seen their cysts and fibroids get smaller. You can read those accounts yourself in the testimonial database on the Steamy Chick Institute site.Womb conditions like PCOS need an advanced steam plan rather than a general one, which is what the consult is for. The nutrition and blood sugar work usually does the heaviest lifting alongside it. And PCOS is a medical diagnosis that deserves medical management too — this runs alongside that, not instead of it.
Sperm health is half of the fertility picture, and it rarely gets half the attention. Sperm regenerates on roughly a 72 to 90 day cycle, which means changes he makes now show up in about three months. Partner support is built into every coaching package.
No. I am not a physician, a doctor of Chinese medicine, or a licensed acupuncturist. Steam practitioners are not doctors and cannot advise or consult on medical concerns. I don't diagnose, treat disease, or prescribe. For medical advice about steaming with a specific condition, consult a doctor who is knowledgeable about steaming — and keep in mind most doctors know very little about it. I work alongside your medical team and I'll tell you plainly when something belongs in their hands.
You can buy herbs anywhere. The problem is that the wrong herbs, or the wrong steam length, can cause issues with your cycle. Which blend you need — gentle, cooling, disinfecting, or cleansing — depends on which of the seven imbalances is showing up in your cycle, and that is what the consult is for. Once you have your plan, you steam at home on your own.
Steam users have reported improvement with endometriosis, and it is one of the conditions peristeam training covers specifically. There is also a 2018 case report from Dae-Jeon University following a woman whose endometriosis returned after laparoscopic surgery. Using vaginal steaming alongside other traditional Korean medicine, she stayed free of recurrence for 34 months. You can read it in the research section at steamychick.institute.Endometriosis needs an advanced steam plan rather than a general one, so it is not something to work out on your own with herbs off a shelf. That is what the consult is for.It is also a medical diagnosis that deserves medical management. This runs alongside your care team, not instead of them.
Often, yes. Steaming has been helpful for women who deal with recurring infections, and steam is efficient at clearing out irregular vaginal discharge, including discharge that is discolored or has an odor.In Traditional Chinese Medicine, that pattern is dampness — excess mucus and fluid building up in the body.
There are two ways to run a steam session. No heat. You boil the water, steep your herbs, turn the heat off, and sit over the pot as it gradually cools. This is the simplest setup and the one most women start with. With heat. A low, steady heat source stays under the pot so the steam holds at the same level for the whole session. This suits longer sessions that would otherwise cool down too soon.Which one is right depends on your imbalance, how long you are steaming, and how easily you can judge temperature. If controlling the heat is difficult, no heat is the safer choice. We decide this at your consult, and it becomes part of your steam plan alongside your blend, your timing, and your session length.
